How To Calculate Your Roof Square Footage

Accurate measurements are the foundation of any successful roofing project. Follow these steps to prepare your inputs for the calculator.

1

Measure Footprint

Measure the length and width of your home's ground floor. Multiply them to get the base area. For L-shaped homes, split them into rectangles.

2

Factor in Pitch

The "pitch" is how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches it runs. A steeper roof has a much larger surface area than a flat one.

3

Account for Eaves

Don't forget the overhang! Most eaves stick out 1 to 2 feet past the walls. Our calculator automatically handles this added dimension.

Why Precise Estimation Matters

Roofing materials are a major investment. Underestimating leads to project delays, while overestimating wastes thousands of dollars.

Shingle Bundles: Most bundles cover 33.3 sq. ft. You need exactly three to cover one "square" (100 sq. ft.).

Felt Underlayment: #30 felt is thicker and more durable than #15, but it covers less area per roll (~216 vs ~432 sq. ft.).

The Waste Buffer: We always include a 10% buffer. This accounts for cutting, trimming, and hip/valley waste.

What is a "Roof Square"?

In the roofing industry, one "square" is equal to 100 square feet. Contractors use this unit to simplify large-scale estimates. For example, a 3,000 sq. ft. roof is described as a "30-square" project.

PRO TIP:

Always round your "Squares" UP to the next whole number when buying materials!

Roofing Calculator FAQ

It is highly accurate for standard rectangular or L-shaped roofs. However, if your roof has complex architectural features like multiple dormers, turrets, or varying pitches, we recommend a professional on-site evaluation.
#30 felt is the industry standard for durability and protection. #15 felt is often used as a lighter, more economical option for outbuildings or temporary covers. For Milwaukee winters, #30 is highly recommended.
Our 10% buffer typically covers standard waste and a starter row for simple roofs. If you have extensive eaves and gables, you may want to increase your waste factor to 15%.
Cool roofs (often TPO or PVC) are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard shingles roof, significantly reducing energy costs for commercial buildings.
